The Dubai Salik system has made a significant contribution to the city’s road network improvement. As it is such an essential part of Dubai’s culture. Now you won’t have to stop your car at any point along a Dubai highway to pay a road toll to someone sitting at a toll booth: you’ll be able to go at regular highway speeds. You drive directly past the tolling gate because there are no toll booths, barricades, or physical gates.

About Salik

The electronic toll road system in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is known as Salik. In Arabic, it means “clear and moving.” Salik is based on RFID technology and automatically deducts a charge when you pass the toll gate each time.

Drivers must purchase a 100 AED pre-paid card that is attached to their windscreens. Each time they travel through a toll gate, 4 AED ($1.08) are taken from their account. You must attach a Salik tag to your vehicle’s windscreen to utilise Dubai’s roadways. When you drive through a Salik toll gate, their scanning technology instantly recognises your car.

Details about Salik

On July 1, 2007, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduced the Salik toll to assist in the improvement of traffic flow on Dubai’s major roads. Initially, two toll gates were placed on Sheikh Zayed Road, one at Al Garhoud Bridge and the other near the Mall of the Emirates. Still, in September 2008, two additional gates were installed on Maktoum Bridge and at Al Safa.

Two more SALIK gates were installed on September 9, 2008, at Safa Park and at Al Maktoum Bridge. The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) described how the new gates function alongside current gates. A driver will be charged Dh4 once he goes through the Al Barsha toll gate.

He will not be charged if he continues his route, does not make a right or left turn does not get delayed in traffic, and passes through the Al Safa toll gate. The driver, however, will be fined Dh4 if he continues his journey and passes through the Al Maktoum toll gate.

Furthermore, if the driver goes through the Al Garhoud toll gate on the same route, he will be charged Dh4 once again. If the driver is on a single continuous journey, the Al Safa toll gate will be free. However, this solitary SALIK plant was decommissioned in 2017.

The Al Maktoum Bridge toll gate is free to make the process easier for vehicles, while the Floating Bridge is closed for traffic at night. SALIK gates were then deployed at two more locations: one at the Dubai Airport Tunnel and two on both sides of the Al Mamzar Intersection on Al-Ittihad road. These were turned on on April 15, 2013.

The highest daily price for utilising the tolled roads was 24 AED ($6.48) per automobile. However, as of July 1, 2013, this was abolished, and cars will no longer be charged an upper limit. Business Bay Crossing, Floating Bridge (near Al Maktoum Bridge; links Al Ittihad Road (in Deira) with Al Riyadh Street (in Bur Dubai)), Al Khail Road, and Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road are some of the alternative routes.

On February 19, 2017, the Safa Park toll gate and the Al Barsha Gates were split, and cars are now charged Dhs 4 for both toll gates. On Sheikh Zayed Road, a new SALIK gate has been installed between the Energy Metro Station and the Ibn Batuta Mall. On October 24, 2018, the gate was turned on. There are a total of 8 SALIK Toll Gates in Dubai as of December 2018.

Dubai Salik Toll Gates Locations

In Dubai, there are a total of eight Salik toll gates. They may be seen on all of Dubai’s main roads and bridges.

The list of Salik Dubai toll gates has been updated below. Keep in mind that the two Al Mamzar toll gates on Al Ittihad Street are treated as one, so if you pass through both in the same way during one hour, you will only be charged once.

DUBAI SALIK GATE          TOLL GATE LOCATION
Jebel Ali Salik Gate         Sheikh Zayed Road
Al Barsha Salik Gate       Sheikh Zayed Road
Al Safa Salik Gate  Sheikh Zayed Road
Al Garhoud Salik Gate     Al Garhoud Bridge
Al Maktoum Salik Gate   Al Maktoum Bridge
Airport Tunnel Salik Gate  Beirut Street
Al Mamzar North Salik Gate     Al Ittihad Street
Al Mamzar South Salik Gate     Al Ittihad Street

AED 4 is levied for each Salik Dubai Toll Gate. You will be charged separately each time you pass through a gate, regardless of how many visits you make in a day. The two Al Mamzar toll gates on Al Ittihad Street are the lone exception. You will be charged once if you travel through each of these in the same direction within one hour (AED 4).

There will be free passing on, and no Toll will be charged at the Al Maktoum Gate _ From 10 pm from Thursday to 6 am Saturday. Otherwise, all gates are active 24 hours a week.

How to Get Salik Tag?

To obtain a Salik tag in Dubai, you must first register and create a Salik account, which will provide you with a unique Salik Pin Number. You may establish a new Salik account at any petrol station in Dubai or on the official Dubai Salik website.

To register for Salik in Dubai, you must fill out the required information, submit the required papers, and pay the necessary costs. You will get a package containing the Salik Tag, which you may place on the front windshield of your car once you have properly registered.

Documents Required for Salik Registration:

  • Copies of your identity documents, such as a copy of your Emirates ID or a copy of your passport
  • A copy of the mulkiya (vehicle registration card)
  • A copy of your business licence (applicable only for cars registered under companies).

Salik Paying Process

You must register with Salik and affix the Salik Tag to the front windshield of your car in order to pay the Dubai Salik toll gate costs. At these computerised gates, the Salik Tag will be scanned to deduct the toll fee. The Salik toll gates in Dubai are equipped with the most up-to-date sensors and cameras to detect your automobile. This means you won’t have to slow down or stop your car from paying the Dubai Salik costs.

Salik Fines

If you sell your car or change your licence plate number, you must notify the Salik authorities. Otherwise, you may be punished with a violation.

You have five days to replenish your Salik account. A violation will occur if your Salik account balance is insufficient. To travel through the Salik toll gate, you will need to pay AED 50 per day.

A new tag would be given to your existing Salik account if you crossed the Salik toll gate without a Salik tag on your car. You will be penalized AED 100 on the following pass if you do not pay the new tag fine within ten days. You’ll be fined AED 200 for the second offence and AED 400 for each subsequent offence.
