Q’s Bar and Lounge
Q’s is the first bar of its kind for jazz icon Quincy Jones, offering something truly unique in Dubai’s nightlife. Despite its location in the magnificent Palazzo Versace, its interior (velvet rug, black and mahogany leather) is sleek and elegant, allowing the music to capture the center of the stage. Every talented and fascinating artist like the previous one, changes every few months – always a rising star chosen by Jones himself.
Q’s Bar & Lounge at Palazzo Versace is the first live music bar run by music giant Quincy Jones. The man who wrote and directed Frank Sinatra and his band opened the bar in 2016 and hosts regular international events – the focus here is entirely on music.
Intimate space, the first thing you see on arrival is the main platform, just a few meters above the ground, where bright “Q” fluorescent lights pass through the wall behind the musicians. This quaint little bar is theater-focused, and rightly so – all the tables face the bar, and the patrons sit across from the live David Davis show – until May and five nights a year in the city. I spent a week with Rhythm & Blues, whose band traveled all the way from the US to perform for all of us in Dubai.

Boston Bar
The Boston Bar, once home to Dubai’s bars, is probably less popular on most people’s nightlife schedules, but the Al Satwa pub is still good. An American bar (you know, everyone knows your name) designed according to an American sitcom from the eighties, it’s a small place based on an island bar. If you are looking for cheap drinks and an authentic and pleasant bar atmosphere, you will have a hard time doing better at Al Satwa.
For most people, the Dubai Boston Bar is not the first place where you can have a few drinks. The changing geography of the city does not help – in fact, many of the busiest bars now find their homes on the south side of the mall. Still, the Boston Bar gets a good deal.
There is nothing new or modern about this place – in fact, we think little has changed since it opened in the late 90’s. Unsurprisingly, he does exactly what he says he does with the 80s American sitcom. Looking through the stained-glass windows, you will find low ceilings and very little natural light, meaning the general feeling is somewhere between comfort and horror (hot for us, claustrophobic for our friends at the advertising agency)).
As you might expect, there is a selection of fresh drinks and regular specials. Unfortunately, the TV football package was not updated during our last visit, but we hope it will be fixed. The food is intentional and the dishes are huge. But we can do without the wings on the slate – the variety is not always great.
Miss Lily’s
A lively Jamaican bar, Miss Lily’s combines disco balls, vinyl stands and sticky neon signs with reggae and dance music, and serves dishes full of jerk chicken, goat curry, cod and bananas. Definitely a timeless bar, there’s a reason McGettigan’s is often crowded (or at least in the pre-Cubid era) – it has a spacious drinking area, great jumping gardens and a fun old-fashioned atmosphere. Live Irish music is a regular presence and there are plenty of opportunities to entertain even the most die-hard reality hunters every day, not to mention the glorious happy hour every Saturday through Thursday from 12:00 to 20:00.
At JLT OG at the foot of the Bonington Hotel, McGettigan’s reflects the brand’s expansion, gradually adding this special bar. First the terrace is connected to the outside, then to the side with the other entertainment area, The Baggot, and finally to the back, so it is not always easy to see where the bar actually ends. The food in the pub here is one of the best you will find in town – proper fish and chips and buffalo chicken wrappers are part of our regular orders – regular specials to keep your wallet busy all week. Live sporting events, a relaxed atmosphere and great prices are the norm here, and the food at the highest level. There is often live music and comedy, making it one of the best bars in Dubai.
This popular Irish pub, located near Sheikh Zayed Road, is always busy, whether you were at one of the most popular breakfasts (packaged bacon, sausage or eggs – or all of the above), or had a drink with your partner’s coffee. A cup of something black and human. The place is full of mismatched corners, corners and furniture, and it feels like a world far from the central location of Dubai. It’s not brilliant or luxurious – but it’s fun and relaxing.

Long’s Bar
This cheap and cheerful pub has been a regular guest in Dubai’s bar scene for almost two decades, taking its name from the island’s main bar, and it still claims to be the longest bar in the Middle East. The crowd is not so young, but the atmosphere there is so warm and friendly, that you will want to go back to this old pub. Let’s start by talking about the family drink at 199 Dhs, which is a particularly worthwhile brunch (yes, usually for a few discounts on one-on-one specials). If you are looking for a break from the prestigious (and expensive) Friday class in town, you will find it here.
There is no waiter to pick up your glass of water, no live foie gras station, and no order from the menu. But who needs it all? It’s basically a gasoline-priced lunch with a buffet at one end of the room, cold drinks in the middle and TV screens in other places that show everything from the IPL to NBA wallpapers. Grab a plate and add greasy salads, sausages and cheeseburgers, or ask the wok guy to make you a hot omelet. Brunch at the Long’s Bar may not be as legendary as the bar itself, but you won’t get a five-star meal here. It’s all a matter of Friday afternoon celebrations at the pub, and the price allows members to meet more than once a month.
