Are you one of many people looking for health benefits derived from Bee Pollen?

If you are a frequent visitor to your trusted local food and health store, you might have come across many natural bee pollen products. This product is fast growing in popularity, especially amongst health and fitness enthusiasts.

Bee pollen is an excellent condiment for many meals and beverages, including salad and smoothies. Many nutrition experts worldwide are now so convinced about the health benefits of bee pollen that they recommend daily meal plans that include this bee-made product.

However, before going into what you can gain from consuming bee pollen, it is worth mentioning how bee pollen is made.

How is Bee Pollen Made?

As you might already have guessed by now, bees make bee pollen. Different species of bees produce pollen, but honey bees and bumblebees are prolific at making bee pollen.

These bees extract nectar from flowers and store the nectar in a small sac known as a crop, where the nectar is mixed with the digestive enzymes of the bee.

In the process of suckling up nectar, bees also tend to pick up pollen on their hairy legs. The nectar and pollen are taken back to the hive and stored in a honeycomb made of beeswax.

This nectar and digestive enzyme mixture stored up in the honeycomb is a source of food for the bees and humans.

Apart from bee pollen, bees also make beeswax and honey from the nectar and pollen collected from flowering plant life. These natural products can now be purchased from most health shops anywhere in the world.

What Are The Benefits of Bee Pollen?

Now that you know how bee pollen is made, you need to know its benefits to your overall health.

Here are seven amazing benefits of bee pollen backed by leading nutritionists.

#1. Bee Pollen Curbs Allergies:

Nutrition experts believe that bee pollen may be effective in alleviating allergies. A study on live rats documented in the reputable Journal of Ethnopharmacology proved this possibility.

According to the research, bee pollen phenolic extract or BPPE was administered to rats suffering from ovalbumin-induced allergies. The results from the study showed a drastic reduction in both IgE and IgG1 antibodies.

These antibodies are linked with allergies and allergic reactions. In addition, BPPE administered in rodents protected the lab rats from anaphylactic shock.

#2. Bee Pollen is Nutrient-Rich:

You would be hard-pressed to find a natural product that contains as many nutrients as bee pollen. This fact was confirmed during a study conducted by eggheads at the coveted University of Rochester Medical Center.

Bee pollen was seen to consist of amino acids, enzymes, minerals, and vitamins. Bee pollen contains most of the nutrients needed by the human body for healthy living.

However, it must be mentioned that the nutritional composition of bee pollen will depend on the flowering plant life from which the pollen was derived.

In one research finding published in 2012 (in Molecules), a batch of 22 natural bee pollen samples obtained in Portugal had the following nutritional composition:

  • Ash (2.9%),
  • Carbohydrates (67.7%),
  • Raw fat (5.2%), and
  • Raw protein (21.8%).

In addition to this, the collected samples of bee pollen also included a significant amount of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds. Flavonoids are compounds known for their effectiveness in regulating blood sugar, improving cardiovascular conditioning, and promoting good holistic health.

#3. Bee Pollen is Effective in Treating Burns:

Do you know that bee pollen may be more effective in treating burn wounds than using silver sulfadiazine or salt solution instead of leaving the wound untreated?

Researchers found the effectiveness of bee pollen on burn wounds in test pigs. The study results revealed that bee pollen improved the healing process faster.

The Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal is where this study was published back in 2016. Currently, extensive research is being conducted on the possibility of bee pollen being a staple treatment for burn victims.

#4. Bee Pollen Offers Anti-inflammatory Effects:

Bee pollen consists of antioxidant compounds such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. These compounds are believed to help curtail the activities of inflammatory enzymes in the human body.

A 2015 study of the anti-inflammatory effect of bee pollen was published in the renowned International Journal of Advanced Research.

This study revealed vast improvements in the condition of albino lab rats suffering from an inflammation of their prostate gland or prostatitis when treated with bee pollen.

#5. Bee Pollen Could Improve Liver Health:

Nutrition expertsstrongly believe that bee pollen can help protect and promote liver health. In 2013, a study on lab rats revealed that bee pollen prevented liver cells from exposure to oxidative stress. The research showed that bee pollen could promote liver cell regeneration and healing.

Research published in 2016 in the vastly popular Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences showed that bee pollen could prevent liver damage and heal damaged liver cells in lab mice.

#6. Bee Pollen Can Lower LDL Cholesterol:

Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol also goes by the moniker of “bad cholesterol”  because of its devastating influence on cardiovascular health. However, a study published in 2017 in Nutrients revealed that lab mice administered with bee pollen were less likely to develop atherosclerosis.

This study involved the feeding of lab mice with a diet high in fat to cause them to develop atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterized by an accumulation of fatty deposits on the artery walls.

LDL cholesterol is responsible for this medical condition, including high blood pressure, stroke, cardiac arrest, and sudden death. Bee pollen was also seen to promote increased High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or “good cholesterol” in the lab mice.

#7. Bee Pollen Offers Anti-Cancer Properties:

Research into the effectiveness of bee pollen in cancer treatment is ongoing. In 2007, a study in the Phytotherapy Research journal hinted at the possibility of bee pollen destroying cancerous cells in people with prostate cancer.

Though this research was carried out on cancerous cells placed in test tubes, the results were impressive enough to be publicly shared. Further research on animal and human subjects could potentially see bee pollen revolutionize conventional cancer treatment methodology.

Conclusion:

Bee pollenis a natural, organic food that can potentially improve your health in many different ways. Bee pollen can boost your nutritional intake by providing amino acids, carbs, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.
