History

Etisalat, a joint-stock business comprising International Aeradio Limited, a British firm, and local partners, was formed in 1976 as part of the Emirates Telecommunication Group Company PJSC. The ownership structure changed in 1983, with the government of the United Arab Emirates owning 60% of the firm and the remaining 40% being publicly listed.

The UAE central government passed Federal Law No. 1 in 1991, granting the organization the power to provide wired and wireless telecommunications services within the nation as well as between the UAE and other countries. It also provided the company with the authority to grant licenses for the ownership, importation, manufacture, use, and operation of telecommunications equipment.

This effectively granted Etisalat regulatory and control capabilities, thereby completing Etisalat’s monopoly in the UAE. The law provided provisions for the growth of the country’s communications industry to preserve the country’s economic development.
