The UAE has condemned Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for making a racist statement during the inauguration of the new European Diplomatic Academy in Bruges, Belgium.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) released a statement condemning Borrell’s remarks, calling them racist and stressing that they contribute to a growing atmosphere of intolerance and prejudice globally.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation summoned Paulsen, acting Head of the Mission at the EU Delegation to the UAE, who was represented by the Director of the European Affairs Department, Mohamed AlShehi, and the Deputy Assistant Minister of Political Affairs, Reem Ketait. The High Representative’s Office was asked to offer a written explanation for the High Representative’s cruel and discriminatory remarks.
According to the ministry, Borrell’s words are a disheartening development at a time when all parties are aware of the need of respect for various religions, cultures, and ethnic groups, as well as principles like as pluralism, cohabitation, and tolerance.
