Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, or SEWA, is a government utility in the Emirate of Sharjah that distributes electricity, water, and natural gas to all inhabitants. It provides the service to over 300,000 people. Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, who became Chairman in 2020, is the new Head of SEWA.
On September 23, 2020, SEWA changed its name to Sharjah Electricity Water and Gas Authority (SEWGA). Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority were formerly known as Sharjah Electricity and Water Company. Even before Sharjah became a member of the UAE, it operated as a private entity. Following then, it was absorbed into the government as the Electricity and Water Department.
SEWA is now run as a separate body, following the directions of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council. His Excellency Dr Rashid Alleem, the current chairman of SEWA, has held the position since 2014.
About
SEWA became a successful organization in 2015, generating income for the government. In 2014, it was also named the finest Arab power and water authority. Even before the United Arab Emirates was founded in 1971, the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority was a private corporation. Sharjah Electricity & Water Resources Company was the company’s previous name.
The main objective of implementing the Authority as a public body with financial and administrative independence is to provide better advanced and efficient services of electricity, water, and natural gas to the residents of Sharjah Emirate, satisfying consumers’ demands and meeting the increasing demands of the ongoing social and economic developments
To meet the difficulties and requirements of today’s world, the Emirate of Sharjah is witnessing a huge economic, industrial, and civilizational development boom. SEWA has made significant progress in expanding the sectors of electricity, water, and natural gas in the Emirate of Sharjah, thanks to the visionary instructions of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
SEWA Sharjah operates power stations and water treatment plants at Wasit, Layyah, Hamriya, Kalba, and Khorfakkan. Furthermore, the firm holds ISO 500001 certifications.
They constructed a new SCADA centre in Nasseriya in 2015, which features one of the region’s largest monitoring control smart displays. Not to add, SEWA has begun installing smart metres throughout the region.
